How Much Can I Save?

Covering Your Swimming Pool = Energy Efficiency

Swimming pools are notorious for losing energy in numerous ways, but none compare to the massive energy loss caused by evaporation.

Evaporating water depletes tremendous amounts of energy.  It only takes one Btu (British thermal unit) to raise one pound of water 1° F, but each pound of 80° F water that evaporates takes a whopping 1,048 Btu of heat out of the pool.  A staggering 70% of energy lost from indoor pools is the result of evaporation.

Pool covers minimize evaporation. According to the US Department of Energy, covering a pool when it is not in use is the single most effective means of reducing pool heating costs. Savings of 50%–70% are possible.

Adding a fully-welded (read The Fully Welded Difference) Alta pool cover prevents energy loss, and results in energy and monetary savings.

Additionally, the pool cover will pay for itself with the money saved in energy costs!

How much saving you will experience is dependent on several variables, but here is what Mick Nelson of Total Aquatic Programming had to say regarding his experience.

“…when we built our first 6-lane 25-yard pool and 4-lane 20-yard pool indoors... our first water heating and water use bill for the month of November was over $5,000.  We invested in pool covers.  We used them every night.  Our water and heating bills never exceeded $1800 from that point on.”
